  • Functionality

Lynx Tape Libraries possess all the functionality expected of a modern library with features such as:

    • Hot-swap tape drives, power supplies, controllers and robotics
    • Touch-screen, graphical user interface
    • Remote web management and operation
    • Remote fail-over (transfer control from the Master to a Secondary)

Functionality that simplifies operation and management.

    Based on LTO Ultrium Technology

LTO Ultrium is the industry standard for enterprise level backup bringing the benefits of:

    • Compatibility with all other brands of LTO Ultrium drives
    • Multiple manufacturers (of drives and media) competing solely on reliability and value
    • A well-defined growth path of 4 generations.

As a result, LTO Ultrium has become the technology of choice in high capacity, high performance backup requirements.

    Scalability

The Lynx base libraries are available as a 30-slot 1 drive or a 60-slot 2-drive unit. Each unit is capable of scaling up to 240 slots (in increments of 30 or 60 slots respectively) and up-to 16 drives. This provides native capacities ranging from 3TB up-to 48TB and data transfer rates of 54 GB/hour up-to 1728 GB/hour (for LTO Ultrium 230 drives) or 6TB-96TB and 108GB/hour-3456GB/hour (for LTO Ultrium 460 drives), or 12TB-192TB and 216GB/hour - 6912GB/hour (for LTO Ultrium 960 drives).

The Lynx Tape Library is upgradeable to future generations of the LTO Ultrium drives, doubling the capacity and performance with each step.

Scale the performance and the capacity as and when required.

    Flexibility

The Lynx Tape Libraries can be initially introduced as a cost-effective single server centralised backup device, then scaled to a multi-server SCSI connect device (for increased backup bandwidth), and then ultimately scaled to a high-performance Fibre connected SAN backup subsystem.

The Lynx Tape Libraries can also be connected to a mix of Fibre and SCSI, and future interface cards will support IP (iSCSI).

    SCSI Connect, LAN Backup

    • Central tape resources
    • Single point of administration

    Multi-server Direct Connect

    • Central shared library
    • Single point of media handling
    • Higher performance compared with LAN backup

    SAN Connect

    • Central tape resources
    • Single point of administration
    • High performance for all SAN connected servers

Note: The model shown above is the Lynx LX60 (60 slot) library

    Compatibility

Lynx Tape Libraries are based on the market-leading platform ensuring compatibility with the broadest range of servers, SAN infrastructures, operating systems and applications. Lynx Tape Libraries are certified across a broad range of products with continuous testing taking place with newly released products.

The Lynx Tape Libraries support the broadest range of products, and are backed by the highest level of technical capability in Australia.

    Support

Lynx Tape Libraries are jointly released with Hewlett-Packard, and are covered by a 3-year next day on-site nationwide warranty by HP. HP carries a full inventory of spares in every major city (and many towns) throughout Australia. The base warranty can be upgraded cost effectively to same day or 24x7 on-site support.

For well over a decade, Lynx is the leading supplier of backup hardware and software in Australia, backed by an unparalleled level of skill and expertise. Lynx is fully certified and has direct relationships at lab level with the leading storage vendors (such as Brocade, Emulex, CA, Veritas and HP). This ensures the highest level of support, not just for hardware, but the entire backup and recovery solution.

    Selecting a library

There are only a few practical decisions in selecting a tape library, namely:

    • Number of drives - Each LTO drive can backup a SAN or SCSI connected server with a practical transfer rate of 50-60 GB per hour.
    • Number of slots - Lynx libraries start from 30 slot and can go up-to 240 slots in 30 slot increments. A 30 slot library using Ultrium 230 provides a capacity range of 3-6TB.
    • SCSI for native SCSI connection or Fibre for SAN connectivity?
    • Rackmount or standalone?

    Sizing considerations

Although there are only a few decision points, sites differ in their network topologies, server and workstation configurations, data & volumes contents, data growth, backup window, recovery requirements, and operational constraints and requirements. Key considerations toward sizing a library are:

    • What capacity is to be backed-up on a daily basis (incremental/differential/full)?
    • How much time is available for backups (during the week and weekends)?
    • How much data will be backed-up across the LAN, SCSI and/or fibre?
    • What is the spread of data across the servers?
    • What type of rotation scheme will be employed (to meet recovery requirements)?
    • What is the backup cycle that remains in the library for rapid recovery?
    • Is there a requirement for duplicate tapes (for off-site storage)?

Such considerations will influence a solution; how many drives, how many slots, type of connection (SCSI or fibre), appropriate backup application, and most importantly setup.

Lynx Technologies, along with our partners, possesses the necessary skills to configure the optimal solution, integrate it into the environment, and perform verification tests. Total security based on premium products, a strong skills backing across hardware and software, and the highest level of on-site support.
